Tasting notes : A fine balance between malt and hops delivers a satisfying and rounded pale ale with an amber colour, fruity nose and good hop aroma.
What’s the story ? Charles Wells was a Chief Officer in the Merchant Navy. In the early 1870s he met his sweetheart Josephine Grimbley while on leave and the pair later became engaged. However Charles’ prospective father-in-law wouldn’t give his daughter’s hand to a sea-faring man so he took a drastic career change buying a brewery and thirty two pubs..

History Old picture of The Bell
The Bell Inn has a relatively modern frontage, but a trained eye will discern the inn's Tudor origin. In the time of Queen Elizabeth I the timber framed building was entered from the side, the two ancient doorways can still be seen in outline, whilst inside, in the bars, the original Tudor crossbeams are much in evidence.

Whether The Bell was purpose built as a Tudor beer-house is not known, but it was definitely operating as a hostelry in 1622 when the landlord was William Chambers.
